We have a goal to launch 100 startups every year. This may sound like a big goal, but even if 1% succeeds in being a unicorn, it would fundamentally change the fate of the region. When i look back at the region and the world, i see a strong need for innovation. The whole world moves at a crazy fast pace. Ultimately we need to do something radical if we are to make an impact in society.
Whilst i believe in a global village concept, of everyone being under a single family, i note the realities of the world. Every country and everyone is in it for themselves. We are most impacted not by whats happening elsewhere in the world, but by whats happening directly in our own country and in our region.
Thus South East Asia, a place where Epic Startups is based, will have the goal to bring up the region and make it thrive. This is our first goal is to succeed in the region.
Thus our goal of 100 startups is to have 100 South East Asian startups every year being born. This group of companies and dynamic founders will be like a family, growing together and helping each other succeed.
Without this, I’m always afraid that our way of life and quality of life for us and future generations will struggle.
I’ve seen how the currency of my own home country Malaysia has struggled and declined throughout the decades. The purchasing power of the people have dropped. Whilst this is good for exporters, ultimately it results in people being unable to innovate, to upgrade themselves and to change. We will forever be stuck in the middle income trap.
Whilst i can’t speak for other countries in the region, my own assumption tells me that they too need to change and further improve if they are to be developed economies.
We can see the effects of digital divide happening right now. Our best talents in the country are leaving for greener pastures in the west. The salaries are so much higher. Quality of life is so much better. And no one can blame them for wanting to leave. The opportunities elsewhere is so much better. Howeer, i don’t want to see our best and brightest leave the region only to end up working for someone in some corporate job. I want us to make stuff, innovate, disrupt and come up with new ideas.
We have people full of ambition and passion. Yet it’s not easy to start. One needs skill, money, people, time, knowhow, connection, resources, customers. It’s no wonder that we lack big startups in the region or yet alone my country Malaysia. What we need is the strength and the will to go out there and build up entrepreneurs.
Thus the purpose of Epic Startups. We want to be the company that starts it all. The company that goes out there to build entrepreneurs. To fill in the gaps and help founders get on the startup journey in the fastest and least risky way.
There isn’t a lack of ideas. What is lacking is execution. Or the ability to execute.
I don’t blame founders for not executing. It’s not easy. They need lots of skills and need to be multi talented to be able to make startups work. And it’s tough because not everyone has such skills. But should they give up on their dreams? I say no. Should they give up just because they lack the funds? I say no. I say lets give these enterprising young people a chance. Let’s give them the resources, support and ideas to execute.
Of course, we don’t just simply take anyone in. They need to show grit, determination, and dynamism.
With this in mind i believe anyone can succeed and build a better future. We are Epic Startups and we want to make epic startups. Keen to join us?
